Reiki is a healing energy technique that originated in Japan. I discovered Reiki when I was going through a health crisis. I was doing everything right according to the Westernized model of health, eating healthy, staying active, and sleeping… Well, sleeping as much as a night ICU nurse could sleep. Despite my efforts, I developed extreme GI health issues, with inflammation and a range of intense symptoms. After completing the necessary lab tests and consultations, the doctor suggested medication to treat the symptoms. I felt completely at a loss. I had done everything right by Western standards but was still withering away despite my best efforts.

That was when I heard of Reiki classes being held at a local yoga studio. It was for the beginner level one. As a left-brained, practical person by default, I had no prior knowledge of Reiki or its benefits. At this point, I had done everything else to no avail and was open to anything. I signed up. From the first class (where we were practicing on each other), I felt a shift. I began to feel lighter, and I slept better than I had in years. With continued practice, I gradually felt my body becoming less inflamed. I felt more balanced mentally and emotionally. I was able to start digesting food more easily. Thankfully, my body was beginning to heal.

I was hooked.

This seemingly simple healing technique had given me a sense of hope. After a few years of practicing on just myself and some of my closest loved ones, I felt ready to get my Level II Practitioner certification. This certification allows me to offer services professionally. This has taken my life in a whole new direction, leading me to create Totality Healing. As a health coach, Reiki practitioner, and sound healer, there is no greater honor than to hold space for others to heal.

I am not someone who will ever set out to convince another of what healing looks like for them. Each person’s journey is unique and personal. Also, this technique should not replace professional medical advice. This is just my personal story of finding balance and well-being in my life. If Reiki intrigues you, why not try something new?

What is Reiki?

Understanding Usui Reiki

Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word “Reiki” is derived from two Japanese words: “Rei,” meaning “universal,” and “Ki,” meaning “life energy.” Together, Reiki means “universal life energy.” The most commonly practiced form is Usui Reiki, named after its founder, Dr. Mikao Usui. Usui Reiki involves the transfer of healing energy through the practitioner’s hands, either by placing them lightly on the client’s body or just above it.

How Does Reiki Work?

The Energy Flow

A Reiki session works by channeling universal life energy through the practitioner to the client. This energy helps to balance the body’s energy centers, known as chakras and promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The practitioner serves as a conduit for the energy, which flows where it is needed most in the client’s body. The process is gentle, non-invasive, and deeply relaxing.

Scientific Perspectives

While scientific research on Reiki is still emerging, some studies suggest that it can reduce stress, alleviate pain, and promote emotional balance (Mitchell & Starman, 2024). The exact mechanisms are not fully understood, but many believe that Reiki helps to activate the body’s natural healing processes and restore homeostasis within the body.

What to Expect in Your First Reiki Session

 Before the Reiki Session

Before your first Reiki session, it’s important to find a certified and experienced practitioner. You can ask for recommendations, read reviews, or consult professional organizations. Once you have chosen a practitioner, you will typically have a brief consultation to discuss your health history, current concerns, and what you hope to achieve from the session.

 During the Reiki Session

1. Setting the Environment: A Reiki session usually takes place in a quiet, comfortable setting. The practitioner may play soft music and dim the lights to create a relaxing atmosphere.

2. Positioning: You will be asked to lie down on a massage table, fully clothed, with a blanket for comfort if needed.

3. The Process: The practitioner will begin the session by placing their hands lightly on or just above various parts of your body. They will start at your head and work their way down to your feet, spending a few minutes on each area. You may feel warmth, tingling, or other sensations as the energy flows.

4. Duration: A typical session lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. Throughout the session, you are encouraged to relax, breathe deeply, and let go of any tension.

After the Reiki Session

After your Reiki session, you may feel deeply relaxed and peaceful. Some people experience immediate relief from physical symptoms, while others notice gradual improvements over time. It is common to feel a sense of emotional release, increased clarity, and a deeper connection to oneself.

 Post Reiki Session Care

1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush out any toxins that may have been released during the session.

2. Rest: Allow yourself some time to rest and integrate the healing energy. Avoid strenuous activities and take it easy for the rest of the day.

3. Reflection: Take some time to reflect on your experience. You may want to journal about any insights or emotions that came up during the session.

Reiki sessions can be a powerful tool for healing and personal growth. Whether you are dealing with physical ailments, emotional challenges, or simply seeking a deeper sense of well-being, Reiki can offer a gentle and effective path to balance and harmony. If you are curious about Reiki, consider scheduling a session and experiencing its benefits for yourself.

Remember, each person’s journey with Reiki is unique. It is a complementary practice that can enhance your overall wellness but should not replace professional medical advice. As always, do your own research and consult with healthcare professionals as needed.
